Dr. Erik Erikson was a legendary figure in the field of psychology. He was born in Germany in 1902, and he died in 1994. During his lifetime, he made many contributions to the field of psychology, but he is best known for his theory of psychosocial development.

The psychosocial development theory of Eric Erikson is a well-known psychological model that discusses the stages of human social and emotional development. The theory contends that humans progress through eight stages, each of which is associated with a particular psychosocial conflict.

 

One of the most important aspects of this theory is its emphasis on the importance of childhood experiences in shaping adult behavior. According to Erikson, during childhood, individuals are challenged to resolve conflicts related to trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. role confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair.

 

Erikson’s theory states that every person goes through eight stages of development. Each stage is characterized by a different “crisis.”

Birth Stage

The first stage starts at birth and ends at around 18 months. It is called the “trust vs. mistrust” stage because it is during this stage that a baby starts to develop trust or mistrust towards others.

 

Autonomy vs. Shame Stage

The second stage is called the “autonomy vs. shame and doubt” stage. This takes place from around 18 months to 3 years old. It is during this stage that a child starts to develop a sense of independence and self-control.

 

Initiative vs. Guilt Stage

The third stage is called the “initiative vs. guilt” stage. This takes place from around 3 to 6 years old. It is during this stage that a child starts to develop a sense of initiative and purposefulness.

 

Industry vs. Inferiority Stage

The fourth stage is called the “industry vs. inferiority” stage. This takes place from around 6 to 12 years old. It is during this stage that a child starts to develop a sense of competence and Industry.

Identity vs. Role confusion Stage

The fifth stage is called the “identity vs. role confusion” stage. This takes place from around 12 to 18 years old. It is during this time that adolescents start to develop a sense of identity and purpose in life.

 

Intimacy vs. Isolation Stage

The sixth stage is called the “intimacy vs. isolation” stage. This takes place from around 18 to 40 years old young adults start to develop close relationships with others.

Generativity vs Stagnation Stage

The seventh stage is called the “generativity vs stagnation” stage. This takes place from around 40 to 65 years old when adults focus on caring for others.

Integrity vs Despair Stage

The eighth and final stage is called the integrity vs despair stage .This takes place from around 65 years until death when elders look back on their lives with either a sense of contentment or regret.
